Biography:

Yadira Chinique de Armas (Ph.D., University of Havana) is an Assistant Professor in Bioanthropology at the Department of Anthropology, University of Winnipeg with expertise in human skeletal biology, paleobotany, and stable isotope analysis. Her research interests focus on the interaction between ancient populations and their environment, with emphasis in their subsistence strategies, interactions and mobility. Her current research deals with the biocultural variations and interactions of circum-Caribbean indigenous groups, the origins of agriculture in the Antilles, and the biological and cultural determinants of breastfeeding and weaning practices in ancient human populations.

Her academic background includes a BSc. in Biology (Magna cum laude, University of Havana, 2007), a MSc. in Anthropology (University of Havana, 2009), and a PhD in Biological Sciences (Outstanding PhD Thesis, Committee of Natural Sciences, University of Havana, 2014). In 2016, she got the award of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Postdoctoral Fellowship competition for her research on weaning practices of Caribbean populations. Recently, she obtained a CFI-JELF grant to develop an Osteoarchaeology research facility at the University of Winnipeg. Currently, she is the principal investigator of two SSHRC funded projects: 1) ‘Weaning practices in times of colonialism’ (SSHRC Insight Development Grant, 2020) and, 2) ‘The dynamic Caribbean: Tracing interactions among precolonial indigenous populations in Cuba’ (SSHRC Insight Grant, 2021) and the coordinator of the project ‘Cuba Aborigen’. She co-directs excavations in three archaeological regions of Cuba: Canímar Valley in Matanzas, Guayarúes in Sancti Spiritus and Cauto region in Granma.
