Craig Cooper

The Robin H. Farquhar Award for Excellence in Contributing to Self-Governance


Dr. Craig Cooper is currently Associate Professor and Chair of the Classics Department at The University of Winnipeg. His exemplary work in the area of self-governance is demonstrated by his collegial, effective and dedicated service to more than 40 University and faculty committees including as Chair of the Faculty Council of Arts & Science nominating committee, President of the Faculty & Staff Club, Member and Chair of the Chairs’ Caucus, Senator and Board of Regents member.

Cooper earned his Bachelor of Honours at the University of Alberta before he headed to the pacific coast and completed his Masters of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia. He came to the University of Winnipeg in 1993.

His vast administrative responsibilities at the university began in 1998 and have not waned since dealing with over 33 different committees relating to The University of Winnipeg and Faculty. Currently he serves on over a dozen of these committees with the same effectiveness, energy and dedication. Neil Besner, Professor of English and Associate Vice-President, International, describes Cooper, notes, “I found Craig to be a superbly effective Chair: one who advocated strongly and successfully for his Department, but was keenly aware of the larger issues attending the Humanities Area, the Faculty if Arts and Science and the University.”

Cooper has numerous professional memberships across the country and the globe including the American Philological Association, Archaeological Institute of America, and the Classical Association in Britain to list just a few. His current areas of scholarly interest are in Athenian Law, Athenian Orators and Greek Rhetoric, Greek Historiography and Ancient Biography.
