Employee Benefits


The information provided here is intended as a summary of the more important features of the AD&D benefit. The terms and conditions under which coverage is provided is governed by the master insurance policy, and in any dispute the policy will take precedence over the information provided here.

Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) coverage provides protection in the event an eligible employee has an accident that causes serious injury of death. The payout will be based on the nature of the accident/injury and on a principal sum.

The AD&D plan is insured through Chubb Life Insurance Company of Canada.

Eligible Employees

The following employees are eligible to participate in the University of Winnipeg AD&D benefit:

  • Full-time continuing salaried employees;
  • Part-time continuing salaried employees who work a minimum 50% time;
  • Full-time term/sessional salaried employees whose term is no less than 8 months in duration;
  • Part-time term salaried employees who work a minimum 50% time and whose term is not less than 12 months in duration.

Effective Date of Coverage

AD&D coverage takes effect on date of employment (first day actively at work). If you are not actively at work on the effective date, your coverage will commence on the date when you commence active employment.

Premiums

The cost of this coverage is paid entirely by the University.

Coverage

你是自动覆盖Accidental Death and Dismemberment benefit. The Principal Sum under this insurance is two times your basic annual salary (excluding stipends and overtime), rounded up to the nearest thousand. The minimum amount of coverage is $50,000, and the maximum amount of coverage is $100,000 per eligible employee.

Coverage reduces by 50% for any employee who attains their Normal Pension Commencement Date (NPCD) which is age 65, and who continues in active employment. The maximum amount of coverage for any employee past their NPCD is $50,000.

Beneficiary Designation

The benefit payable in the event of Loss of Life is payable to the beneficiary you have designated for your Group Term Life Insurance. All other benefits are payable to you.

Termination of Coverage

AD&D coverage will terminate on the earliest of the following dates:

  • Upon termination of employment or retirement
  • The date premiums cease;
  • During a strike or lock-out (unless special provisions have been made);
  • Support employees - earlier of retirement or age 70 (first of the month following attainment of age 70);
  • Academic employees – earlier of retirement or first of September following attainment of age 70.

Waiver of Premium

If an insured, under age 65, becomes Totally Disabled with the approval of a Long Term Disability (LTD) claim under the University of Winnipeg Group LTD insurance, the premium payment will be waived that falls during the period of the Total Disability for the Insured.
