Tuning in to the Feminist Frequency

WINNIPEG, MB –Renowned media critic and creator of theFeminist Frequency, Anita Sarkeesian, is the next Axworthy Distinguished Lecture. Sarkeesian will be speaking onHistory vs Women: The Defiant Lives that They Don’t Want You to Knowon Friday, November 16, 2018 at 7:00 pm in Riddell Hall. This lecture is part of the Series on Social Justice and the Public Good in the Centre for the Liberal Arts and Secular Society (CLASS).

Sarkeesian, who has made the list ofTime Magazine’smost influential people in the world, studies how women are reflected in popular culture, especially video games. Sarkeesian’sFeminist Frequencyseries is well known and available online.

Sarkeesian has been targeted by a coordinated harassment campaign against her, known asGamergate.Gamergateis an example of many of the struggles women continue to face in the fight for equality. Despite the attacks, Sarkeesian continues to be outspoken. Her work has been viewed millions of times and her videos also serve as educational tools in high school and university classrooms.

Later this month, Sarkeesian will release her new book that shares the title of her lecture, co-authored with Ebony Adams, with Feiwel & Friends (MacMillan Publishers).History vs. Womenis a collection of 25 stories of extraordinary women, through the ages, who dared to defy history and change the world around them.

Founded in 2015, The Axworthy Distinguished Lecture Series on Social Justice and the Public Good invites top tier researchers, social commentators and political leaders to the University of Winnipeg to deliver lectures on important topics that are open to the public.Lectures are made possible by the generosity of donors, faculty, staff, and alumni.

The Axworthy Distinguished Lecture Series on Social Justice and the Public Good was established in honour of Dr. Lloyd Axworthy, former President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Winnipeg.
